PADI Dive Against Debris Specialty

PADI Dive Against Debris Specialty

PADI Dive Against Debris Specialty

Do you want to make a difference on every dive but are not sure where to start? The PADI Dive Against Debris specialty could be just the thing you’re looking for! You’ll gain the knowledge and skills to activate your inner citizen scientist while helping the marine environment every time you dive.

You’ve probably seen it first-hand; marine debris can be unsightly, dangerous to marine species and hazardous to humans.

You understand the devastating impact that litter has on our ocean environments, but do you also know the important role that scuba divers can play in preventing, removing and reporting debris found underwater?

Through the PADI Dive Against Debris Specialty you’ll become empowered to help a growing movement of debris activists across the globe to safely collect and record the litter polluting our aquatic environment. You could even help inform government policy changes.

As you complete the single open water dive, you’ll practice a range of skills to help you locate, remove and record debris. You’ll then go on to record your findings to Project AWARE.

This course will also count towards the prestigious PADI Master Scuba Diver rating and the dive of this Specialty course may count towards the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Certification.

Knowledge Development

As part of the PADI Dive Against Debris Specialty Course, you’ll complete some Knowledge Development before the good bit starts.

With no course manual required to be read through and completed before you meet the NHDC Team, this promises to be a fun and informal course.

You can get ready for the fun bits by reading the Dive Against Debris Survey Guide, the Marine Debris Identification Guide and the Dive Against Debris Data Card which will be provided by your instructor. There is no other course material to collect and complete in preparation for the dives.

Open Water Dive

After discussing the issue of marine debris, what it is and where it comes from you will plan and execute a single dive at an open water site.

Armed with mesh bags, you will work on collecting litter and safely returning it to shore. You will inspect your collection, recording your finds and uploading the information on a global database.

Your local actions will contribute to a clean, healthy future for the ocean.

We’ll provide everything you need. We pride ourselves on ensuring there are no hidden costs.

We will provide all the basic, as well as any specialised, equipment for diving while clearing the site of any litter. Comfort is everything in scuba diving, therefore if you already have your own equipment, we’d encourage you to bring it along to keep you warm and comfortable while completing the clean up!

Knowledge Development takes the form of an informal discussion about marine litter, it’s origins and impact, and will be completed with the NHDC team before the dive.

While this course can be completed at one of our usual inland sites, the PADI Dive Against Debris Specialty course is best completed on one of our trips, where we can ensure your efforts are for an important cause and really will be appreciated.

New Horizons aims to be flexible with arranging courses to suit your schedule so please give us a call to discuss suitable alternatives.

On all of our PADI Dive Against Debris Specialty course options you will receive…

Knowledge Development

There is no course manual to read through and complete in preparation for the dives. But you can still get yourself prepared for what’s in store by reading the Dive Against Debris Survey Guide, the Marine Debris Identification Guide and the Dive Against Debris Data Card provided by your NHDC PADI instructor.

Your instructor will then help you learn more about:

  • Marine debris, the damage done, what it is, where it comes from and how divers are part of the solution.
  • How to establish a Dive Against Debris survey, the survey frequency, sites, profiles and equipment.
  • The use of photography and knowing what to leave behind.
  • How to make your survey count by reporting the debris you’ve collected to maximise your survey’s benefits.

Open Water Dive

During a single dive, you’ll put into practice the theory; safely collecting and recording marine debris as you explore the dive site. Once back on shore, you’ll go through what you’ve collected, weighing and recording it all before reporting your findings on a global database.
