If you fancy a spot of treasure hunting then the PADI Search and Recovery Diver Specialty is the course for you! You’ll use a range of skills to locate and lift lost treasures small, large or just awkward.
It can happen; things can fall from docks, off boats or even from pockets while diving. If you’ve ever lost something in the water and wanted to go find it, then the PADI Search and Recovery Diver Specialty course is for you.
There are effective ways to search for objects underwater that increase your chances of success. And there are good and better methods to bring up small, large or just awkward items. Search and recovery can be challenging, but a whole lot of fun.
After some self study using the PADI Search and Recovery Diver Specialty manual you will complete four dives over a weekend with your PADI instructor.
You’ll fine-tune your navigation skills, practice a range of diving techniques and develop a better understanding of various search patterns and when to use them.
This course will also count towards the prestigious PADI Master Scuba Diver rating and the first dive of this Specialty course may count towards the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Certification.

Min Age: 12 years old
Medically Fit: Complete this Medical Statement and have a GP countersign it if required.
Ability: You will need to be PADI Advanced Open Water Diver (or Junior Advanced Open Water Diver) certified (or equivalent) to enrol onto this course.

Knowledge Development
As part of the PADI Search and Recovery diver Specialty Course, you’ll complete some Knowledge Development before the fun bits. This will be reviewed with your instructor before putting the theory into practice during four open water dives.
The theory side can be completed at you own pace before being reviewed. Currently only available as a physical manual, this can be collected from the NHDC Dive Centre.
Open Water Dives
Over the course of a weekend, you’ll complete four open water dives with your NHDC PADI Instructor. During these dives you’ll practice and come to master skills relating to:
- Using underwater search patterns using your compass and natural navigation to locate objects.
- Using a lift bag for large or heavy objects, plus other recovery methods.
- How to tie at least three different knots underwater
We’ll provide everything you need. We pride ourselves on ensuring there are no hidden costs.
We will provide all the basic, as well as specialised, equipment for diving while navigating Comfort is everything in scuba diving, therefore if you already have your own equipment, we’d encourage you to bring it along to keep your warm and comfortable while searching!
Knowledge Development can be completed at your own pace but will be reviewed with the NHDC team before certification.
Open Water dives are completed over a weekend, usually at Capernwray, with courses arranged on a regular basis.

On all of our PADI Search and Recovery Diver Specialty course options you will receive…
- Coaching and on-going support from an experienced, passionate and professional PADI Instructor
- Equipment Orientation (specilaist equipment)
- 1 hour (minimum) Knowledge Review (held with your NHDC Instructor)
- 3 hours (minimum) Open Water diving
- FREE rental of all required equipment (including, but not limited to: cylinders & air fills, dive computer, fins, mask, snorkel, drysuit & undersuit, specialist equipment [e.g. lift bags])

Our dives are usually completed in UK water, therefore we recommend you use a drysuit and undersuit for greater comfort. If you have no previous drysuit experience, we will arrange a pool based orientation session for an additional £40 before your weekend in Open Water so you are fully prepared and confident to jump in.
Please note, our course fees covers equipment rental, pool entry fees, PADI Certification fees etc, but do not cover entry fees to open water dive sites. These vary according to location; please ask for further details.

Knowledge Development

An initial £75 deposit will ensure course materials can be issued, allowing you to start as soon as you want!
The NHDC team will be on hand to help you through and answer any questions as you progress. We will then review things and allow you to ask any questions you may have before the fun bits start.
Open Water Dives
During the course of four dives, spread over a weekend, you’ll put into practice the things you’ve been reading about. We offer standard schedules, with a minimum of 3 hours spent in the water practicing and ultimately mastering various specialist underwater searhc and recovery skills.
Standard Course
Complete the PADI Search and Recovery Diver Specialty Water Diver course using the materials of your choice and one of our standard schedules.
Executive Option
Our standard schedules are designed to offer flexibility, however, if these aren’t convenient, or if you feel you’d benefit from the more personal touch, we can tailor our schedules to a more bespoke timetable.
This executive option allows a 1:1 program, giving you the chance to work with a member of the NHDC team to become a master of deep diving.
Elite Option
If you have access to your own facilities, we can come to you! We will work with you to make a truly tailor-made course schedule. Use the course materials then when you’re ready, we’ll complete the Open Water Dives at your preferred facilities. Choose to join us at our usual open water dive sites, or let us escort you overseas. There’s a whole world of possibilities.

A single £75 deposit will allow us to issue the relevant course materials.
Further installment payments can be made with the final balance paid before the open water weekend (or final pool session if completing the Referral option). Talk to us about installment payment options.
