AWARE - Shark Conservation Specialty

Sharks are crucial to marine ecosystems, yet are in a global decline. During the AWARE – Shark Conservation Specialty you’ll learn about the value of sharks and what is causing the rapid loss of shark populations. During two open water dives, you’ll also look at what makes the ideal shark habitat and if you’re lucky, see these majestic creatures in action!

Sharks are magnificent animals and are crucial for the maintenance of marine ecosystems. Many shark species are in a global decline, with many facing extinction.

During the AWARE – Shark Conservation Specialty course you’ll learn more about the value of sharks and what is causing the rapid loss of shark populations.

Following a Knowledge Development Session led by your PADI instructor you will complete two dives in open water, usually over a single day.  You’ll be able to more closely inspect what makes an ideal shark habitat and if you’re lucky, you’ll see these stunning creatures in action!

Knowledge Development

You will complete the Knowledge Development with your instructor before before the fun bits start. With no course manual yet available, all required materials will be provided by your instructor on the day.

This fun and interactive session will see you learn more about why these creatures are so crucial for marine ecosystems and why they are endangered. You’ll then have chance to put the theory into practice during two open water dives.

Open Water Dives

Usually completed over the course of a day, you’ll enjoy two open water dives where you’ll explore what makes the ideal habitat for sharks. You’ll investigate potential hazards that are present as well as what makes it an ideal location for them.

If you’re really lucky, you’ll be able to observe these majestic creatures as they cruise by too!

We’ll provide everything you need. We pride ourselves on ensuring there are no hidden costs.

We will provide all the basic, as well as any specialised, equipment for diving. Comfort is everything in scuba diving, therefore if you already have your own equipment, we’d encourage you to bring it along to keep you warm and comfortable while you dive (hopefully with sharks!).

Knowledge Development will be lead by your PADI instructor and completed before you start your two open water dives.

Open Water dives are usually completed over a day, with courses arranged on a regular basis.

While this course can be completed at one of our usual inland sites, the AWARE – Shark Conservation Specialty course is best completed on one of our trips, where we can really dive in potential shark habitats and have a greater chance of enjoying their company.

New Horizons aims to be flexible with arranging courses to suit your schedule so please give us a call to discuss suitable alternatives.

On all of our AWARE – Shark Conservation Specialty course options you will receive…

  • Coaching and on-going support from an experienced, passionate and professional PADI Instructor
  • Equipment Orientation (when using specialised equipment)
  • 1 hour (minimum) Knowledge Review (with your NHDC PADI Instructor)
  • 1 hours (minimum) Skills Development (open water dives, duration dependent on location & conditions)
  • FREE rental of all required equipment (including, but not limited to: cylinders & air fills, dive computer, fins, mask, snorkel, drysuit & undersuit, specialist equipment [e.g. surface marker buoy])
  • PADI Certification

Our dives may be completed in UK water, therefore we recommend you use a drysuit and undersuit for greater comfort. If you have no previous drysuit experience, we will arrange a pool based orientation session for an additional £40 before your day in Open Water so you are fully prepared and confident to jump in.

Please note, our course fees covers equipment rental, PADI Certification fees etc, but do not cover entry fees to open water dive sites or trip fees. These vary according to location; please ask for further details.

Standard Course

All of the above.

Knowledge Development & Open Water Dives

With no course materials yet available, the Knowledge Development section of the course will be led by your PADI Instructor, who will provide you with all the necessary materials on the day.

This will be followed by two dives, completed in open water usually over a single day. During these dives, you’ll put into practice the things you’ve been learning about.

We offer standard schedules, with a minimum of 1.0 hours spent in the water selecting investyigating potential shark habitats, pontential hazards the dive site may pose and (hopefully) observing these animals in their natural environment.
