What Will I Do?

Knowledge Development

As part of the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Course, you’ll complete some Knowledge Development in your own time. This will be reviewed during a classroom session before your first dive in open water, or during surface intervals if time is not on your side.

The theory side can be completed at you own pace and with electronic and physical manuals to choose from, you can select the format that’s right for you.

Open Water Dives

Over the course of two days, usually a weekend, you’ll complete five open water dives. You will complete two core dives; the deep and navigation adventure dives. The remaining three dives can be chosen from a wide selection so the course can be tailored to suit your specific interests.

If you’re completing the  ‘standard’ or ‘deluxe’ course options, one of the adventure dives can be completed using Enriched Air NITROX instead of air, allowing for longer bottom times. You can go on to complete one further dive using NITROX and gain the sought after Enriched Air NITROX specialty too.

On successful completion of the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course, you’ll be able to dive a whole new range of exciting sites.

Can I Learn to Dive?

Course Pre-Requisites

There aren’t very many pre-requisites; almost anyone can sign up to continue diving!

  • Min Age: 12 years old
  • Medically Fit: Complete this Medical Statement and have GP countersign if required.
  • Ability: PADI (Junior) Open Water Diver certified (or equivalent from another agency)
What Equipment Will I Use?

We’ll provide everything you need. We pride ourselves on ensuring there are no hidden costs.

Once you’ve qualified, you’ll be able to dive to greater depths, and with the chance to use Enriched Air NITROX during the Standard and Deluxe course options, dive planning and ‘thinking like a diver’ will become ever more important.

For that reason, all of our PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course students are offered 15% discount on Suunto Dive Computers if completing the Deluxe Course.

When Can I Learn to Dive?

Knowledge Development can be completed at your own pace but will be reviewed with the NHDC team at our Dive Centre before your first open water session.

Open Water dives are usually completed over a weekend. So you truly get to experience diving to greater depths, the diving will take place at Stoney Cove with weekend courses arranged on a regular basis.

New Horizons aims to be flexible with arranging courses to suit your schedule so if the scheduled dates are not convenient please give us a call to discuss suitable alternatives.

Some Adventure Dive options may benefit from being completed while on one of our trips; ask the NHDC team for full details. Discounts may apply.

What Are My Options?

Knowledge Development

Completed in your own time, this can be started at any time and completed at your own pace. Choose from using a physical manual or an electronic version compatible with desktops, laptops or tablet devices (Touch).

Electronic versions can be issued via email whereas physical course manuals can be collected from the NHDC Dive Centre.

An initial £100 deposit will ensure course materials can be issued, allowing you to start as soon as you want!

What ever option you choose, the NHDC team will be on hand to help you through and answer any questions as you progress. We will then meet you before your first open water dive to review things and allow you to ask any questions you may have.

Open Water Dives

The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course focuses on improving your diving skills. You will complete five training dives, usually over a weekend. Two ‘core’ dives will develop your skills in Underwater Navigation and Deep Diving, with the remaining three of your choice from 15 possible adventure dives.

This is your chance to plan your path with your instructor, and can be tailored to suit your personal interests. Options available include:

Wreck Search & Recovery Drift *
Peak Performance Buoyancy Diver Propulsion Vehicle Diver Night *
Enriched Air NITROX Digital Underwater Imaging Underwater Naturalist *
Delayed Surface Marker Buoy Dive Against Debris Diver Boat Diver *
Drysuit Diver Self-Reliant Diver Fish Identification *

* These Adventure Dive options may be more ideally suited to being completed on one of our trips. Completing the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course with NHDC could open up some amazing opportunities.
