PADI Advanced Open Water Diver

The Course

The next step for the Open Water Diver is this fun filled programme of five dives. Having already experienced the fun and excitement of diving you will now want to enjoy new diving activities. The PADI Advanced Open Water course will help you improve your skills and knowledge of diving. You will dive on wrecks, learn about underwater navigation, enhance your buoyancy skills and learn how to use dive computers on deeper dives. By completing this course more dives will be available to you on your next holiday.

Course Outline

The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course focuses on your in water diving skills. After some self study from the Adventures in Diving manual you will complete five training dives over a weekend. Two ‘core’ dives will develop your skills in Underwater Navigation and Deep Diving.

You will also complete three further dives from the list of standard Specialty courses. Options include Wreck, Delayed Surface Marker Buoy, Peak Performance BuoyancyDrysuit, Enriched Air Nitrox, Drift, Search & Recovery, Night or Naturalist. Some may be of particular benefit if completing the Advanced Open Water course on one of our trips.

Course Duration & Schedules

Having completed some self study from the course manual or online materials all your training takes place at the open water dive site (Capernwray or Stoney Cove). All five dives can be completed over one weekend. Open Water dives for this course are currently scheduled on the following dates:

    • May: Saturday 19th & Sunday 20th (Stoney Cove)
    • June: Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th (Capernwray)
    • September: Saturday 15th & Sunday 16th (Capernwray)
    • December: Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th (Capernwray)

In some cases, qualifying ‘adventure dives’ can be completed while on a NHDC trip; talk to us about your options for completing this course at a time & date to suit.

New Horizons aims to be flexible with arranging courses to suit your schedule so if the scheduled dates are not convenient please give us a call to discuss suitable alternatives (small supplements may apply). Most sessions can be conducted anytime we’re at Capernwray, subject to availability.

Please note: Divers with no previous drysuit training will need to complete a pool based orientation session before participating in the weekend’s training at Capernwray or Stoney Cove. The orientation session can be conducted during one of our scheduled drysuit orientation sessions.

Not Included

  • Travel and entry fees to the open water sites


Minimum age: 12 years old. Children aged 12-14 years old will be awarded the PADI Junior Advanced Open Water certification.

Ability: PADI Open Water Diver (or equivalent from another training agency).

Medical: You need to be in good health and reasonably fit, all students will need to fill in a PADI Medical Statement prior to participation.

We will confirm your place on the course once we have received the completed forms. Please return both forms to us no later than 2 weeks before your preferred course start date.
